Greetings FCA Members!

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President. I have been devoted to promoting the importance of the counseling profession throughout my career. And, I firmly believe that associations are essential to maintain the identity and sustainability of our work. FCA has been readily available to assist and provide support during the difficult situations that have occurred in our state. Your willingness to be there in time of need is greatly appreciated. I recognize and support your on-going commitment to provide counseling services for our communities. I consider it an honor to assume a greater leadership role as we enter 2019-2020.

Since I have been involved with FCA, I have witnessed the dedication of our Executive Boards and Division leaders that work tirelessly to offer professional development conferences, webinars, newsletters and who use social media to further the Mission of FCA; “to promote the value of professional counseling as well as supporting and unifying professional counselors in all settings resulting in high quality practices in Florida”. The mission significantly contributes to the purpose, well-being and futures of counseling professionals.

My goals this year are based on our recently revised Strategic Plan and include the following:

1. Promote the Counseling profession: in alignment with our Purpose, “to promote the counseling profession through public awareness, professional development, and advocacy”.

2. Professional Connections: broaden relationships and linkages with the American Counseling Association (ACA), mental health agencies, relevant professional associations and employment resources, sponsors and create corporate and community partnerships.

3. Membership: to continue to retain and increase membership without increasing the cost.

4. Professional Development: to continue offering comprehensive and diverse learning and credit bearing conferences, webinars, networking opportunities and events throughout the state.

5. Writing: to offer publishing opportunities for our members.

6. Mentorship: provide mentors for emerging leaders and graduate students.

7. Succession Planning: create and establish a strategy to maintain a succession plan for leaders.

8. Resources: develop a handbook for leaders to use as a tool to sustain the association that include documents to ensure consistency of the management of Executive Boards.

Throughout my career I have strongly believed that participatory leadership is essential to ensure the successful accomplishment of the goals of any organization. I have an extensive professional background in counseling and as a university administrator as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, Executive Director of Career Services and Experiential Education and most recently in my private practice. My areas of responsibility have included providing personal and career counseling, executive coaching, strategic and operational planning, developing team building strategies, fiscal management of more than $2.5M, staff hiring and supervision to include counselors, directors, graduate students and interns, building university partnerships, curriculum development, marketing, community engagement and fund raising. I have a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology (M.Ed.). I am also a Certified Master of Career Services (CMCS) and have certifications to administer the Myers Briggs Type Inventory and the Strong Interest Inventory.

I served as the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 President of the Florida Career Development Association (FCDA). I am the Trustee of State Divisions for the National Career Development Association (NCDA). My board experiences also include serving as Vice Chair of the Northern New Jersey United Way, Trustee for the Montclair American Red Cross, and as a Trustee and the Secretary of the State University of New York Maritime College Foundation Board, among others. Former Chair of the NCDA Ethics Committee and former National Chair of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) AfricanAmerican Knowledge Community. Notable awards and certificates include being the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Professional Excellence.

I’m looking forward to an exciting year and meeting many of you. I wish you success in the very important work as counseling professionals and for you to continue to be a valuable asset to our state association.
