Response to Pulse (Orlando) Tragedy: Official Statement and Resources
Dear FCA Counselors,
As the old saying goes, we never expect for “bad” things to happen: Not to us, not in our community. However, on June 12, 2016 the Orlando and Florida community has been changed forever with the senseless tragedy at the Pulse Nightclub. It is with great sadness but an overwhelming loving and compassionate heart that we send our thoughts and prayers to all those impacted by this event.
As counselors, in the next few days and weeks, we will be approached by those who have been impacted personally by this event. We may also find our clients needing to speak about their thoughts and fears for their loved ones and their own communities. More, we may find ourselves comforting our colleagues who have been working hard to support their communities but take little time to take care of themselves.
The Florida Counseling Association is dedicated to being a support for the amazing work that Florida Counselors do every day. We want to make sure that our members are supported with the resources and knowledge they need to be effective with their clients.
FCA has identified some counseling resources for our members.
We plan to continue to build these resources for you, our members. Thank you for the work you do every day, but even more so during the most difficult times.

Greetings from the Florida Counseling Association!
Hello! My name is Anne Flenner and I am honored to serve as the 2016-2017 Florida Counseling Association President. As a professional school counselor and active FCA member for the past 11 years, I have seen FCA change and grow. Without a doubt in my mind, the Florida Counseling Association is truly here for its members, the counselors of Florida!
One of the main reasons FCA exists is to provide professional development opportunities to our members! From our annual convention, division workshops and webinars, qualified supervisors trainings, leadership institutes and more, we strive to serve the needs of all members. We hope you will check out all of the opportunities we have to offer on our website: www.flacounseling.org We are very excited for the 67th Annual FCA Convention. Our Keynote, Paul Gionfriddo, CEO of Mental Health American and author of “Losing Tim: How Our Health and Education Systems Failed My Son with Schizophrenia” and Bob Schmidt, Founder of the Sandy Hook Foundation are sure to be a highlight of the event!
Legislative advocacy is another important piece of FCA! This year we are planning two weeks of advocacy and “Days on the Hill”. Please mark your calendars for October 26, 2016 and February 15, 2017 as we will be “Taking It to the Hill” to advocate for current issues impacting counselors and our clients/students. Be on the lookout for more information as we’d love for you to join us! There is strength in numbers!
Another highlight of FCA is our determination to provide our members with up-to-date information on best practices and current research. Currently, check out the front page of the FCA website for tools and resources for those impacted by the Pulse Tragedy. Be sure to check out our quarterly newsletter, Guidelines! Also, if you are into social media, please “Like” our Florida Counseling Association Facebook page. We are active with over 1,100 people connected with FCA on social media!
Speaking of connecting, another huge benefit for FCA is networking! We have many success stories of counselors connecting with counselors for new opportunities in their career and beyond! We hope to share some of those with you this year and want for you to become one of our FCA success stories! Please participate in your local social events, regional events, professional development opportunities and more!.
Please know that you are welcome to reach out to me at any time! I would love to hear your ideas on how FCA can best support you, the members and counselors of Florida!
