FCDA is a division of the Florida Counseling Association (FCA). FCA is a branch of the American Counseling Association (ACA). FCDA is also a state division of the National Career Development Association (NCDA).

Carolyn Jones, President

Carolyn D. Jones has more than 30 years of experience in career development. She is the President/CEO of CDJ Consulting, LLC, (CDJC). CDJC provides expert service in professional development coaching, team building strategies, human capital management, talent acquisition, and leadership and resource development for colleges, universities, corporations, organizations and non-profit agencies.
Carolyn also has an extensive professional background in higher education administration including strategic and operational planning, fiscal management, building university partnerships, curriculum development, program and course development, experiential education, career placement, job search strategies, outcomes assessment, marketing and fund raising.

She is the Chair of the NCDA Ethics Committee and a member of the NCDA Awards Committee. Her professional memberships include the Florida Counseling Association (FCA), the American Counseling Association (ACA), the National Career Development Association (NCDA), and the Association for Psychological Type International (APTI).

She has served as a member and held national and local positions on professional association and community boards. She has a Bachelors degree in Education and a Masters in Educational Psychology, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Certification, MBTI Team Building Certification, National Career Development Facilitator Training Certification and New York State Teacher Certification. She is a recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service.
Stacy Van Horn, President-Elect


Dr. Stacy Van Horn is currently a full time faculty member and School Counseling Coordinator at the University of Central Florida in the Counselor Education and School Psychology Program within the Department of Child, Family and Community Sciences. She teachers graduate students at both the masters and doctoral level primarily in the areas of career development, counseling with children and adolescents, ethical and legal issues in professional school counseling, and coordination of comprehensive, developmental school counseling programs. She also supervises practicum students in the Community Counseling and Research Clinic (CCRC) on campus and school counseling interns throughout Central Florida schools. Dr. Van Horn is currently in the process of revising the UCF Graduate Career Counseling Certificate Program which will include advanced training and coursework, including career and college readiness for children and adolescents and applied career services within diverse settings.
Prior to her position as a Counselor Educator, Dr. Van Horn worked as a professional school counselor for over nine years in Orange County Public Schools working with diverse students, teachers, and families in Central Florida.Dr. Van Horn has experience in creating and coordinating comprehensive, developmental school counseling programs at both the elementary and middle school level. In addition, she has experience collaborating with exceptional education school personnel on developing strategies and counseling approaches for exceptional education students. Her current research interests include training and supervision of professional school counselors, counseling interventions with diverse children and adolescents, and the role of professional school counselors in providing effective career and college readiness interventions in schools. Dr. Van Horn has presented at national, regional, state, and local counseling conferences, including American Counseling Association, Association for Specialists for Group Work, American School Counseling Association, the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Florida Counseling Association, the Florida School Counselor Association, and invited presenter at the Florida Association for Gifted Children.
Maria Schaeffer, Treasurer & Membership Committee Chair

Maria Schaeffer is an accomplished, resourceful, visionary master career specialist with a successful track record in creating and enhancing programs in transition for students with disabilities, workforce development, and family, school and community involvement. Proven ability in establishing and implementing policies, procedures and protocols. Maria holds a Master’s degree in Special Education, a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Management and is a certified Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) as well as an Offender Workforce Development Specialist and Instructor (OWDS-I). She is a member of the Iota Lambda Sigma’s (ILS) Nu Chapter, a professional honorary society recognizing excellence in career and technology education and workforce development in business and industry.
Melanie Adams, Secretary

MelanieAdamshas been with Florida Atlantic University since June 2013 but has been working in career services since 2010. She serves as the Assistant Director on the Career Advising, Counseling and Education team at the FAU Career Development Center. Melanie works closely with the University’s ACCESS (Academic and Career Enhancement for Student Success) program as the liaison for career counseling and instructs multiple sections of a Career & Life Planning and First Year Experience courses. Also she conducts workshops, and individual career counseling sessions on various career development topics. Melanie is a Global Career Development Facilitator and an active member of the National Career Development Association. Additionally she actively attends and presents at various professional conferences on career-related topics. She received her master’s degree from Florida International University in Higher Education Administration and her bachelor’s degree in Communication with a minor in marketing from Florida Gulf Coast University.
Aida Varela, Past President

Aida is excited to continue serving FCDA members for the 2016-2017 term. Aida currently works for Miami Dade College as an Enrollment Specialist/Academic & Career Advisor for one of the National TRIO Student Support Services Program in Miami, FL. She is a graduate from Florida International University, where she obtained her Master of Science Degree in Counseling Psychology. She felt in loved with the Career Development class she was required to take as a graduate student and made a decision to continue strengthening her expertise in this area. She has had extensive experience working with disadvantaged adolescents and emerging adults in order to promote positive identity development, linked to personally meaningful goals and careers. In addition, Aida has maintained membership in several steering committees in order to provide guidance and leadership support to organizations.
Liliana Caldero, Professional Development

Liliana earned her Master of Arts in Counselor Education and her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!).Currently she finds fulfillment in helping tenacious non-traditional students at Strayer University access academic and career services. As a first-generation college graduate, she hopes to help prepare first-generation students for their best fit career from the time they enter college until they graduate. She served as the Chi Sigma Iota –Upsilon Chi Chapter Newsletter Committee Chair from Winter 2015 – Summer 2016. Her professional memberships include the National Career Development Association (NCDA) and the Florida Counseling Association (FCA). She looks forward to helping to coordinate professional development opportunities for FCDA members during her term.
