KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

The Reality of Human Trafficking “Not in Our Backyard”

Presented by Dr. Lourdes Araujo

Human trafficking is a fluid and pressing concern surpassing all races, social classes, demographics, and gender. No population is exempt from the ever-present danger of traffickers.  Human traffickers are motivated by desire, steered by money, lack respect for human rights, target the vulnerable, and harm their victims' emotional and physical well-being. This presentation will recognize the signs of human trafficking, demonstrate best practices and promote anti-trafficking awareness.

Other presentations include. . . .

Support After a Mass Shooting: Addressing Suicide Ideation

Presented by Amanda DiLorenzo-Garcia

This presentation will share the narratives of mass shooting survivors through a research study conducted in 2020. After a traumatic incident, suicide ideation should be assessed. This presentation will express the importance of lethality assessment after a mass shooting through the stories of survivors.

The Relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Health Outcomes

Presented by Dania Fakhro, James Rujimora, Sarah Mendoza, and Melissa Zeligman

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a public health crisis affecting adult social and emotional functioning. We investigated the presence of ACEs in a clinical training clinic (i.e., a clinic serving the community while also providing counselors-in-training with actual community clients) and the impact of these ACEs on client symptoms before and after attending counseling (N = 90). The results showed that 68% of the sample reported two or more ACEs but were not predictive of client symptoms before or after three weeks of counseling. Implications for counseling and supervision are provided.

Racial Trauma: Treatment & Advocacy Strategies to Support Clients at the Margins

Presented by Mercedes Machado

This education session will provide participants with an overview of racial trauma which impacts BIPOC clients daily due to enduring pervasive racism and other forms of oppression. Participants will be challenged to think about how they can become better anti-racist practitioners. Clinical interventions and advocacy strategies will also be discussed.

An Eclectic Approach to Building Resilience Among Professional Counselors Working with Trauma

Presented by Shara Goudreau

Trauma survivors may have different reactions to their experiences including but not limited to anxiety, depression, intense fear, helplessness, arousal, and a shift in how they view themselves, others, and the world. While the fundamental clinical skill of empathy facilitates connection in the therapeutic relationship, it is also a risk factor for counselors to develop vicarious trauma (VT). VT can cause similar reactions of the survivor within the counselor, also shifting the counselor’s belief system and perceptions of themselves, others, and the world. The impact of VT, especially when unacknowledged, can result in significant personal and professional consequences and impair a counselor’s ability to work effectively with clients. This impairment may increase the risk of ethical and legal violations as well as harm to clients. Therefore, it is imperative that counselors are aware of the signs and consequences of VT and have strategies to reduce and prevent it. An eclectic approach to build resilience and wellness in professional counselors as a protective factor against VT will be presented.
