"Bridging the Cultural Gap with

Culturally Responsive ACT Interventions"

Friday, April 28, 2023

11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. EST

Presented by

Javier Ponce, MS, LMHC, NCC

and Maria Alayza, MS, LMHC, LMFT

Approved for 1.0 Continuing Education Hour for the
Florida Board of CSW, M&FT, and MHC and NBCC

Research shows that when interventions are culturally adapted, clinicians’ credibility and clients’ engagement and efficacy increase (Luoma et al., 2017; Smith et al., 2011). Although there is a proliferation of evidence-based theoretical orientations, such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), research studies demonstrate that infusing culturally-adapted interventions enhance the effectiveness of treatment outcomes (Perry et al., 2019; Zemestani et al., 2022).

Therefore, this presentation aims to help attendees augment their multicultural competence in incorporating culturally-responsive ACT interventions with diverse populations while upholding ACT principles. The presenter will briefly discuss cultural factors such as age, language, and acculturation level that counselors must be cognizant of when conceptualizing their clients’ treatment and tailoring metaphors to be sensitive to their cultural backgrounds.

Additionally, the presenter will briefly review the ACT hexaflex and demonstrate multitudinous techniques that counselors can utilize when working with each of its six components: diffusion, acceptance, contacting the present, self as context, values, and committed action. The presenter will include additional tools, such as ACT-related videos, songs, and technological tools to assist their clients in fostering psychological flexibility.

Learning Objectives

  • Incorporate cultural factors to develop more effective clinical case conceptualizations and treatment.
  • Use metaphors as experiential exercises and successfully adapt them depending on their clients’ cultural backgrounds.
  • Identify, learn, and implement various ACT strategies in treatment.
