This webinar will cover important issues and concerns regarding prescribing psychotropic medications to minority youth. The session will review biological theories of childhood psychiatric disorders. In addition, attendees will be able to recognize potential ethical dilemmas for counselors and identify multicultural differences in the application and understanding of pharmacological treatment approaches of childhood psychiatric disorders

Objectives

  1. Attendees will be able to acquire knowledge regarding the biological theories of childhood psychiatric disorders.
  2. Attendees will be able to identify the primary groups of psychotropic medications used with children.
  3. Attendees will be able to recognize potential ethical dilemmas for counselors and identify multicultural differences in the application and understanding of pharmacological treatment approaches of childhood psychiatric disorders.
  4. Attendees will be able to learn about concerns regarding psychotropic medication prescription rates with minority youth.
  5. Attendees will be able to learn about concerns regarding psychotropic medication use among children in foster care.
  6. Attendees will be able to describe how psychotropic medications impact their younger clients’ and their families’ lives to properly incorporate this knowledge into the treatment process.
