"Healing Ambiguous Loss in Transgender Families:  Re-storying Lost Identities"*

Maria Giuliana, LMHC, Veteran (She/Her/Hers)

Ms. Giuliana is a LMHC and qualified supervisor and is the founder of Beyond the Matter Counseling and Consulting Services in the Jacksonville Area.  Her clinical specializations include mental health counseling with children, adolescents, adults, and couples and families, and she is an expert in Military Family Life and Veteran needs.  Ms. Giuliana is a Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral candidate at National Louis University.  She has presented works directed toward military culture, counselor education and supervision, and transgender issues.

Webinar Objective:  Demonstrate experiential exercises counselors can use to assist clients struggling with the evolution of changes that occur through the process of a loved one’s gender transition.

Learning Objectives:

  • Educate clients and counselors-in-training on ambivalent guilt reactions and ambiguous loss as it relates to the clients with a transitioning family member.
  • Demonstrate the use of the “The Relationship Tree” as an experiential approach to processing grief as it relates to ambivalent feelings and ambiguous loss.
  • Facilitate the process of identifying perceived losses related to the transitioning family member and guide clients to re-author their family story.
