American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Training

Want to make a difference during the most difficult times? Are you licensed mental health counselor/intern, counseling graduate student, school counselor/psychologist?

 

 Disaster Mental Health Workers:

  • Help people cope with disasters
  • Serve their community
  • Travel to and serve other communities in the U.S.

 By completing this training participants will have completed the required coursework to become a service association with the Red Cross Disaster. Once completed, the participant must register with their local chapter.

 This training will cover:

60 minutes - Disaster Cycle Services: An Overview - This course is the first in the Disaster Cycle Services course curriculum. It provides an overview of how DCS fulfills the Red Cross mission and describes the whole cycle process of helping individuals, families and communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. The course also reviews the role of community and government partners and describes opportunities for volunteers in Disaster Cycle Services.

60 minutes - Disaster Mental Health: Introduction is a basic level course. The course presents real-life stories to illustrate the services that Disaster Mental Health workers provide to people affected by disaster. Participants are introduced to the differences between the day-to-day work of mental health professionals and the delivery of mental health services during a disaster.

4 hours (safe time) - Disaster Mental Health Fundamentals is a 2-part course consisting of:

  • Part 1: A self-paced, online course that introduces the key concepts, knowledge, and skills required of a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health worker.
  • Part 2: A 2.5-hour, instructor-led course which provides participants an opportunity to apply their learning to real-world examples experienced by Disaster Mental Health responders, whether responding locally on a disaster action team (DAT) or serving on a large disaster operation far from home.

 

This training will be offered free for those who have registered for all those who have registered for  the 2017 Florida Counseling Association Convention. $15 internet/site fee for FCA Members not attending the Convention. $30  internet/site fee for non-members of the Florida Counseling Association who are not attending the Convention.

 

Once you register online at www.flacousneling.org, you will receive a follow up email with directions on how to register for your account before the training. via the America Red Cross.

 

Lunch on your own.  6 CE Hours will be provided.
