He is also a Past President of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors, the New York Counseling Association, and the New York Association of Marriage and Family Counselors.

Grief and Loss: What Counselor Need to Know
(This event has been cancelled, apologies for the inconvenience)
Coping with loss and grief is a normal part of living.      Learning Objectives:
     * Articulate the essential skills necessary for counseling clients with loss, death, and grief issues
     * Articulate the similarities and differences between normal and pathological grief

Dr. Nick Hanna

Relationships With Fathers
(This event has been cancelled, apologies for the inconvenience)

In this experientially focused workshop, counselors will be invited to learn to deal with relationships with fathers. The training is based on the philosophy that counselors must first know themselves as growing individuals, especially with regard to understanding their own relationships with their father.

Sometimes this can be a complex and difficult journey; other times not so arduous. A model for engaging clients in psychotherapy will be presented as a guide. Participation in this workshop can be personally rewarding and challenging in a joyful manner. It can also be a difficult process that, once undertaken, can offer freedom from the past. This workshop offers a process for a more mature, skilled individual approach for working on oneself and with clients and articulate their relationship with their fathers.

     Learning Objectives:
     * Articulate their relationship with their fathers and how that impacts them and their relationship today
     * Apply model to assist clients in engaging in the process of under-standing relation-ship with fathers

Dr. Nick Hanna, LPC, NCC, is a Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education and Supervision from Duquesne University where he served the Counselor Education and Supervision Pro-gram for 45 years.

Nick received his advanced professional training from the Gestalt Institute in Cleveland, Ohio and continues to maintain a small private practice working with individuals, couples as well as facilitating men's groups. Nick has presented on Relationships with Fathers, Open Your Heart and Counselor Self-Care, nationally, regionally and on the state level.

“DIAGNOSING CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS WITH THE DSM-5”

Presented by: Carlos P. Zalaquett, PH.D., LMHC, Professor at the University of South Florida

Children and adolescents' mental disorders represent an important health issue. Childhood disorders are associated with significant impairment and distress, and negatively impact interpersonal relationships, intra-psychic health, school performance, and well-being. As importantly, these disorders are frequently overlooked and undertreated.  This is an unacceptable situation because many of the childhood disorders respond well to psychosocial interventions. Counselors of all specializations can play a key role in detecting and referring students to appropriate mental health resources, or providing evidence-based interventions when possible. All counselors need to know the most current information regarding mental health disorders. The purpose of this training is to present current DSM-5 classification of the most commonly observed childhood mental disorders.

Objectives:

ü  List two substantive changes in the DSM-5

ü  Describe two major changes in DSM-5’s anxiety and mood disorders

ü  List at least one new disorder included in section 2 of the DSM-5

***  LUNCH ON YOUR OWN  ***

PART 2 – 1:00PM to 3:00PM

"DSM-5, ICD-10, and Third Party Payers"

Presented by: Aaron Norton, LMHC, Certified Addictions Professional, and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor at Integrity Counseling

2013 was a big year for mental health professionals: DSM-5, new CPT codes, a third edition of the ASAM treatment criteria, implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and the announcement of a mandatory shift to ICD-10 codes in 2014 (or is it 2015?)--it's no wonder so many mental health professionals have questions about how these changes impact their work, not to mention how they'll get paid!  This 2-hour presentation was designed to answer some of the most frequently asked questions mental health professionals have about how these changes impact their relationships with insurance panels and other third party payers with a particular emphasis on DSM-5.

Objectives:

ü  Understand the paradigm shift in DSM-5

ü  Recognize the relationship between DSM-5 and both ICD-9 and ICD-10

ü  Know the answers to a series of frequently asked questions about how changes in the DSM-5 affect billing and payment with insurance panels and other third party payers.
